The Fete

The Fete

****1/2

Dad (Nicky Henson) has been a bad lad, running away to the States with someone younger than mum. Now he's back and keen to carry on where he left off. After all, he's brought an NYC baseball cap for daughter Lizzie (Kara Tointon), clearly convinced that this will do the trick.

But things have moved on while he's been over the pond. Mum (Jane Gurnett, in a far more interesting role than she had in Crossroads) has got herself a new fella and Lizzie's dating, too. In fact, dad's reunion trip to the local fete doesn't go at all as planned.

Paul Farrell has written a strong story, which says more about the nature of broken families than the usual single mum left struggling, or child facing psychological trauma.

The characters are realistic and, as in life, not everything is cut and dried.

Excellent.
